Its Open Season for Witch Hunters ‘Tsikamutandas’ – TMPC, Police Join Forces

Its Open Season for Witch Hunters ‘Tsikamutandas’ – TMPC, Police Join Forces

In a shocking turn of events, the Traditional Medical Practitioners Council (TMPC) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have launched a joint crackdown on notorious witch hunters known as Tsikamutandas in Masvingo’s Zaka and Nyajena districts. These rogue practitioners have been accused of swindling villagers out of their possessions and tearing families apart by accusing people of witchcraft and demanding payments in the form of livestock to ‘cleanse evil spirits’.

The TMPC has written to the ZRP, requesting assistance in arresting and bringing to book persons operating as Tsikamutandas. According to TMPC Acting Registrar Givemore Kanda, the council is concerned about the increased illegal activities of these fraudulent practitioners, who are allegedly working in cahoots with some traditional leaders and village heads. The police have confirmed their involvement in the crackdown, calling on members of the public to notify them of the whereabouts of Tsikamutandas.

Chief Bota Born Tafirenyika Bwazvo claims to have joined the crackdown, refuting allegations that he was involved in the Tsikamutandas’ operations. However, sources close to the matter cast doubt on the chief’s denial, suggesting that the chain of corruption may rise to the top. Allegations of bribery and corruption have been made, with claims that Tsikamutandas are paying police officers and traditional leaders to ensure smooth clearance of cattle taken from unsuspecting villagers.

Sources reveal that the Tsikamutandas are operating in specific areas, with one allegedly habored in Mutukirwi Village with the blessing of the village head. Another is said to be staying in Chiponda Village at a police constabulary’s home, raising questions about the extent of corruption and complicity.

The effectiveness of the crackdown remains to be seen, but it marks a significant step towards restoring sanity in the affected communities. As the TMPC and ZRP work together to bring the Tsikamutandas to book, one thing is certain – the people of Zaka and Nyajena deserve justice and protection from these rogue practitioners. Will the authorities be able to dismantle the networks of corruption and bring the perpetrators to justice?
