An Epworth woman who was filmed assaulting her young son and burning his hand on a gas stove has pleaded guilty to charges of ill-treating a minor.
Mercy Kawesa appeared before Epworth magistrate Esther Mutezo, where she admitted to the offence. The court remanded her in custody until Monday for the full recording of her plea.
The case attracted widespread public attention after a video of the incident went viral on social media last weekend, prompting police to launch a manhunt that led to Kawesa’s arrest.
Details of the Incident
According to prosecutor Vincent Chidembo, the incident happened last Thursday at Overspill Shops in Epworth.
The court heard that the child had entered a neighbour’s tuckshop while the shop owner was away. This reportedly angered his mother.
Kawesa allegedly picked up a cooking stick and repeatedly assaulted the boy on his hands before placing his left hand on a gas stove flame several times.
The assault caused blisters on the child’s left palm, the court was told.
Viral Video Triggered Arrest
The disturbing incident was secretly recorded, and the footage later circulated widely on social media, sparking public outrage.
Following the viral video, police launched an operation to locate Kawesa, which eventually led to her arrest.
Awaiting Reports
The court was informed that the State is still waiting for a probation officer’s report and a medical assessment of the child before the case proceeds further.
Kawesa remains in custody as the matter continues before the court.
