A disturbing incident of domestic violence unfolded in Harare’s Tafara suburb when a mother-in-law allegedly poured boiling cooking oil on her son-in-law’s face during a heated confrontation. According to The Herald, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. on a Friday, when the man visited his wife’s family home to reconcile after a domestic dispute.
The wife had accused the man of emotional and physical abuse, prompting her to seek refuge at her parents’ home. Winnie Gurai Chipengo, the mother-in-law, confronted the man about the abuse allegations when he arrived at the house. In a shocking turn of events, she allegedly splashed boiling cooking oil on his face when he entered the house.
The victim sustained severe facial burns and was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where his condition is critical. The extent of his injuries is still unknown, but doctors are working to ensure his survival and minimize any long-term damage.
Chipengo was arrested and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. She appeared before Harare magistrate Weston Nyamwanza, where she was granted $300 bail and remanded to November 17 for further court proceedings.
In a separate incident, four siblings from Mabvuku appeared in court for allegedly assaulting their stepmother over a dispute about electricity supply. The stepmother was hospitalized with head and body injuries after being beaten with stones, planks, and fists. The four accused siblings were granted $300 bail each and are expected back in court on November 17.
