In a move that left everyone speechless (except for the auctioneer, who was probably doing backflips in their seat), businessman Wicknell Chivayo cased the joint at the Angel of Hope Foundation’s Christmas Fundraising Dinner, dropping a cool $600,000 on President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s iconic scarf. Yes, you read that right – $600,000 for a scarf. To put that into perspective, you could buy a small island in the Caribbean for that kind of cash or build a whole 5star hospital.
The bidding war was intense, with FS Mining and Collins Mnangagwa (the president’s twin son) throwing their hats into the ring, but Chivayo was determined to walk away with the prize. And walk away with it he did, clad in the scarf, looking like the cat who ate the canary (or in this case, the scarf).
The scarf’s sale is just the latest example of Chivayo’s over the top philanthropy. He recently donated $1 million to his former primary school, Dudley Hall, to build new dormitories named after the president and first lady. Because what’s a few million dollars between friends, right?
The Angel of Hope Foundation, founded by First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, is surely thrilled with the windfall. And who knows, maybe they’ll even get a matching tie for the president to go with his scarf .
