Zimbabwean Ex-CFO Sentenced in SA

Kudakwashe Mpofu, a Zimbabwean national, managed to climb the corporate ladder in South Africa using a collection of forged documents, landing himself a sweet gig as Chief Financial Officer at the North West Development Corporation (NWDC). The absurd part? He paid just R3,000 for a fake permanent residence permit, which helped him secure a salary of R1.63 million as CFO.

Mpofu’s portfolio of deceit included a fake exemption certificate dated 1996  , when he was only five years old , a critical skills visa, and a work permit. With these documents, he convinced everyone he was the real deal, even getting approved for luxury vehicles like a Land Rover Sport, BMW 3 Series, and Ford Ranger.

His scheme unraveled after an anonymous tip-off to the Department of Home Affairs in July 2023. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) investigated, and Mpofu was convicted on two counts of fraud. He received a three-year prison sentence, which may be converted to correctional supervision, and an additional three-year suspended sentence

The SIU hopes this conviction serves as a warning to others trying to game the system. As for Mpofu, it looks like his high-flying career has come crashing down.
