Thousands of people gathered today, September 6, 2025, to celebrate the life and legacy of King Mzilikazi, the founding monarch of the Ndebele nation. The King Mzilikazi commemorations, which began with a week-long series of activities dedicated to preserving Ndebele cultural heritage, reached its peak with a vibrant march and ceremony.

The march, which started at Matshobana (NocZim garage along Luveve Road), featured Amabutho, Amatshitshi, Izimbongi, members of the royal family, and cultural enthusiasts showcasing traditional attire and spirited performances. The procession concluded at the Large City Hall, where attendees boarded free buses to Mhlahlandlela for the main ceremony.

In a symbolic gesture, the march diverted from its normal route and approached Barbourfields Stadium, home of Highlanders Football Club. This detour highlights the deep cultural and historical ties between the royal lineage and one of Zimbabwe’s most iconic football clubs. Highlanders FC, also known as Bosso, was formed in 1926 by Prince Rhodes and Prince Albert Khumalo, two grandsons of Ndebele King Lobengula ka Mzilikazi.

This year’s theme, “Siqoqa Isizwe Ngamasiko” (We strengthen the nation through culture), underscores the importance of cultural heritage in nation-building. The event drew members of the royal family, traditional chiefs, government officials, business leaders, and members of the public. Special guests included Zambian Chief Chilonga, Prince Mavuso of the United Kingdom of Southern Africa, and local chiefs Chitanga, Gezani, Tshovani, Garahwa, and Mahenye.

Sipho Gama, chairman of the Mthwakazi kaMzilikazi Cultural Association (MMCA), emphasized that King Mzilikazi was a nation builder who united people from all walks of life. “This event is not just for the royal family; it’s for everyone who identifies with King Mzilikazi, his philosophy, and the broader Ndebele culture. Everyone is welcome, regardless of ethnicity, race, or cultural background,” Gama said.

The ceremony continues to celebrate the life and legacy of King Mzilikazi, promoting cultural heritage and nation-building. Today marks the peak of the celebrations, bringing together thousands to honor the king’s impact on Zimbabwe’s history and culture .
