In a heartwarming display of redemption, over 300 inmates at Khami Prison near Bulawayo were baptized last week. The Seventh-Day Adventist Church led the initiative, because who doesn’t love a good baptism? The prisoners had been primed for spiritual renewal through weeks of evangelism and discipleship programs. Retired evangelist Dumisani Nkomo, a former inmate himself, led the baptism ceremony. The SDA Church didn’t stop at spiritual salvation. They partnered with Jesus Behind Bars to drill three boreholes, providing much-needed water access within the prison. Because let’s be real, water is essential – for drinking, hygiene, and baptisms.
Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi highlighted the importance of faith in rehabilitation, saying, “Crime has many facets, one of which is spiritual.” The prison will host a family week starting April 28, allowing inmates to reconnect with loved ones in a relaxed setting. Because who doesn’t love a good barbecue and some music?
Khanyezi emphasized that rehabilitation extends beyond confinement, stressing the need for community and faith-based support to ease inmates’ transition back into society. With spiritual guidance, family support, and basic necessities like water, maybe these inmates will be ready for a fresh start.
