Former ZBC Employee Waits 10 Years for Pension

A former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) employee, who was retrenched in 2015, is still awaiting his pension payout. Despite numerous promises and assurances, the payment remains outstanding.

The employee, who worked for ZBC for 13 years, was among 400 workers retrenched following a Supreme Court ruling that allowed employers to terminate contracts with three months’ notice. He received several letters from ZBC management, including promises to pay his pension benefits, but nothing has materialized.

In an open letter to ZBC board chair Helliate Rushwaya, the former employee appealed for assistance in receiving his pension payout. He expressed hope that the new law requiring motorists to pay ZBC licence fees would provide the necessary funds to settle outstanding pension payments.

The former employee highlighted the struggles faced by retrenched workers, including those who have passed away while waiting for their pensions. He urged ZBC to prioritize paying out outstanding pensions and to reform its operations to attract advertisers and create content that resonates with audiences.

The case highlights the challenges faced by former ZBC employees who are still waiting for their pension payouts, despite the broadcaster’s continued operations and revenue generation.
