A 34-year-old man has been arrested in Harare after allegedly posing as a City of Harare municipal police officer and extorting money from informal traders and small business operators.
The City of Harare identified the suspect as Romeo Madododo, who was reportedly caught outside Town House while attempting to solicit a bribe from one of his alleged victims. He was masquerading as a municipal police officer at the time of the arrest.
Madododo was apprehended by genuine municipal police officers and later handed over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP). He is currently being held at Harare Central Police Station, facing charges of impersonation and fraud, and is expected to appear in court soon.
City authorities have urged anyone who may have been duped by the suspect to report their cases at Harare Central Police Station to assist ongoing investigations.
⚠️ Warning Over Criminal Gangs Masquerading as Municipal Police
In a related development, the City of Harare warned residents about criminal gangs posing as municipal police officers, particularly in the CBD and Mbare areas. The council said the suspects accuse motorists of violating parking bylaws before forcing their way into vehicles and robbing occupants of cash and valuables.
According to the city, some suspects linked to a gang operating near Rufaro Stadium have already been identified following a recent robbery involving a Beitbridge-bound motorist. Two of the suspects were allegedly captured in a viral video and later identified by residents.
The City of Harare has appealed to victims to report such cases to the police or contact Chief Superintendent Chendambuya of the Municipal Police on +263 776 304 893 to aid arrests and prosecution.
