The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a warning to the public about the dangers of seeking employment or private engagements through social media platforms, especially with unverified individuals. This warning comes after a disturbing incident in which a 30-year-old Chitungwiza woman was robbed and raped by two men who posed as her potential employer’s representatives.
The victim had been contacted by an unknown “woman” on WhatsApp, who offered her a job as a shopkeeper in Domboshava. The “woman” instructed the victim to meet her at Mungate Business Centre, where two men approached her, claiming to be sent to collect her. Instead, they took her to Crowhill, Borrowdale, Harare, where they robbed and raped her.
In a bizarre twist, the suspects allegedly demanded that the victim sing a rendition of “Shona Mothers’ Song” before they would let her go. Unfortunately, her singing skills didn’t quite hit the right note, and she was subjected to further abuse.
The ZRP urges the public to exercise caution when engaging with unknown individuals on social media, especially when it comes to job opportunities or private engagements. It’s essential to verify the identity and legitimacy of potential employers or clients to avoid falling prey to such scams.
