Zimbabwean Teen Law Student Found Dead in UK River

A heartbreaking incident has affected both the Zimbabwean and UK communities after 19-year-old Christine Chido Benjamin, an aspiring lawyer from Zimbabwe, was found dead in the River Irwell in Manchester on July 17, 2025.

Christine was a talented student who had received four scholarships and was studying law, hoping to become a barrister.

Her body was discovered by divers after a night-long search near the Lowry Hotel, where she was last seen. The search began after police received reports around midnight that someone had entered the river near the Salford and Manchester border.

Emergency teams, including marine and underwater units, quickly arrived at the scene. Police set up a cordon as divers searched the waters around Blackfriars Road.

Christine’s mother, devastated by the loss, shared details leading up to her daughter’s death.

She noted that Christine had recently returned from a trip to Portugal and seemed troubled. “She wasn’t herself. She looked confused and lost,” her mother said.

Christine had been taken to the hospital after telling nurses that her friends in Portugal had given her cannabis.

Although she was treated and discharged, her mental health appeared to decline. Her mother said Christine began speaking oddly, often referring to herself in the third person, and wandered between shops and restaurants.

The family grew increasingly concerned and sought help from the police. Initially, her mother said, they refused to search for her. Later, they called to inform her that Christine had been found dead.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death, and investigations are ongoing. The family is waiting for answers to understand what happened to Christine.

Her sudden passing has left many in shock, especially those who recognized her dedication to her education.

She is remembered for her academic achievements, courage, and the bright future she had ahead of her.
