Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono exposed a shocking scandal involving self-proclaimed prophet Walter Magaya, founder of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries. “This guy, Walter Magaya, faked an entire graduation at UNISA ,” Chin’ono wrote on Facebook. “The fake prophet, who has conned gullible Zimbabweans, staged a ceremony pretending to receive a degree from the University of South Africa. UNISA publicly denied he ever graduated.” The forgery was used to contest Magaya’s disqualification from the ZIFA presidential race, sparking investigations by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for fraud. UNISA is pursuing legal action for reputational damage.
Chin’ono criticized the public’s blind trust “It’s embarrassing that educated adults are deceived by this crook. It reflects the moral and intellectual decay in our country. If the educated glorify fraudsters, what hope is there?” The outrage echoes broader concerns: “Imagine staging a photo shoot just to con people,” he added. Magaya faces additional scrutiny over past allegations, including a 2019 HIV/AIDS “cure” claim and 2022 sexual abuse accusations. Yadah TV, his channel, was shut down on DStv in January 2025.
