A Chinese firm has boosted learning conditions at Jairos Jiri Children’s Centre Primary School in Harare after installing a solar power system valued at US$12,000, easing the impact of persistent electricity shortages at the institution.
The 12kW solar photovoltaic system was installed by Jiangsu Fanye Power Energy Equipment Company and is expected to provide stable electricity to classrooms, administrative offices and other critical facilities. The centre caters for close to 200 children living with various disabilities.
The project was officially commissioned on Friday, with China’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zhou Ding, presiding over the handover ceremony. In addition to the solar installation, the ambassador also presented learning materials, computers, school bags and food supplies to support the pupils.
Addressing guests at the event, Ambassador Zhou said the initiative symbolised the growing cooperation between China and Zimbabwe, particularly in the education sector.
“Today marks more than the handover of equipment. It reflects the strong friendship between our two countries and our shared commitment to improving education and livelihoods,” he said.
Jairos Jiri Association president, Alva Senderayi, welcomed the development, saying the solar system would significantly improve the learning environment for children who have been affected by frequent power outages.
“This intervention is a game changer. Reliable electricity means uninterrupted lessons and a better future for learners with disabilities,” she said.
Founded over six decades ago, the Jairos Jiri Association provides education, rehabilitation and vocational training services to people with disabilities across Zimbabwe.
