The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) is set to don caps and gowns as planned for its 44th Graduation Ceremony this Friday, following a dramatic legal twist that saw the Association of University Teachers (AUT) pull the plug on an urgent court bid aimed at halting the event.
The AUT had rushed to the High Court on 8 August 2025, seeking to interdict the much-anticipated ceremony. But come Monday’s case management meeting, the judicial spotlight revealed a tangled web of “substantive, procedural, and legal defects” in the union’s application—prompting a swift retreat.
Not only did the AUT withdraw its challenge, but the court also handed down a bill of costs, ordering the union to foot the expenses racked up by the 13 respondents, including the University itself.
In the wake of the ruling, UZ reassured its academic family and the wider community that the graduation extravaganza will proceed without a hitch. “Graduands are encouraged to continue with their preparations, and all logistical arrangements remain firmly in place,” the university declared.
To smooth the final hurdles, the Bursar’s Department, Library, and Faculty Offices will throw open their doors from 8am to 4:30pm on the public holiday, ensuring graduands can complete their clearance with ease.
With thousands expected to gather on 15 August 2025, the stage is set for a memorable celebration of achievement, undeterred by courtroom drama.
