Truck Driver Faces Culpable Homicide Charges Over Seke Road Tragedy

The driver of the truck involved in the devastating Seke Road accident, which claimed 17 lives on July 22, 2025, is set to appear in court facing charges of culpable homicide. The incident occurred when the truck collided with a commuter omnibus near Hunyani Bridge, resulting in one of the worst road accidents in Zimbabwe’s recent history.

Preliminary investigations suggest a mechanical failure, possibly a broken prop shaft, caused the truck driver to lose control after attempting to swerve around a Honda Fit that allegedly swerved into the truck’s lane. The impact was severe, crushing the kombi underneath the massive vehicle.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the accident. Authorities have urged road users to remain cautious and report any mechanical issues promptly to prevent further tragedies. The government has also announced plans to improve road safety measures, including high-tech surveillance, stricter driver training, and police crackdowns.

The accident has sparked widespread outrage, with many demanding improved road safety measures and accountability. Chitungwiza Mayor Rosaria Mangoma called for the crash to be declared a national disaster, highlighting the need for urgent action to address Zimbabwe’s alarming road fatality rates.

Zimbabwe records a road accident every 15 minutes, killing at least five people daily. The government has pledged to tackle the issue through a six-point safety plan, including AI traffic cameras, driving school reforms, and stricter vehicle checks.
