Tragedy Strikes Empandeni West Village

A somber mood has engulfed Empandeni West Village in Matabeleland South’s Mangwe District following the tragic death of 35-year-old Gugulombumbi Ncube. He took his own life after struggling with severe stomach pain, leaving the community in shock.

On July 27, Gugulombumbi had dinner with his family at his mother’s home in Ward 13. Later that evening, around 8 PM, he reported feeling unwell and retired to his room. The next morning, his brother Obedingwa found him hanging from the roof truss after receiving no response to his knocks.

The incident has sparked concern about the rising number of suicides in the area. Nhlanhla Regis Ncube, the Mangwe Rural District Councillor for Ward 1, expressed alarm that only men are involved in these cases. “This is the fourth suicide case in Wards 1 and 13,” he said, highlighting efforts to raise awareness and collaborate with church committees to provide support.

Inspector Chiratidzo Dube, a police spokesperson for Matabeleland South, urged the public to be vigilant about signs of distress, such as mood changes and withdrawal. She emphasized the importance of seeking professional help for those feeling overwhelmed
