Tagwirei’s Co-option Sparks Heated Battle

Tagwirei’s Co-option Sparks Heated Battle

A power struggle within Zanu-PF has come to the fore, with a heated battle brewing over businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei’s co-option into the party’s Central Committee. The controversy has pitted Patrick Chinamasa against Christopher Mutsvangwa, with the two high-ranking officials exchanging blows over the legitimacy of Tagwirei’s appointment.

According to Mutsvangwa, the process was flawed, and Tagwirei is ineligible for the position. However, Chinamasa insists that the appointment was approved by the politburo and is a done deal, pending formal adoption by the Central Committee.

Chinamasa has fired back at critics, accusing them of creating unnecessary “furore” over a settled matter. He emphasized his experience as a Central Committee and politburo member, stating that Provincial Coordinating Committee recommendations are usually a formality.

The dispute highlights Zanu-PF’s internal power struggles, with Chinamasa clashing with Mutsvangwa and Secretary-General Obert Mpofu. Observers believe the battle over Tagwirei’s seat reflects a deeper struggle for influence and control within the party ahead of future leadership transitions.

The Central Committee is expected to formally adopt Tagwirei’s appointment, along with other co-options from Mashonaland West and Matabeleland North, at its next meeting. The controversy exposes the complex web of alliances, rivalries, and power dynamics within Zanu-PF, where money, loyalty, ambition, and succession are colliding in ways that threaten to destabilize the party from within .
