In a bold move, South Africa’s Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, has thwarted Operation Dudula’s efforts to bar undocumented foreign children from enrolling in public schools. The group had sent notices to several Soweto schools, threatening them not to admit these learners for the 2026 academic year.
Gwarube firmly stated that education is a fundamental right, and no organization can disrupt schools or deny children their right to learn. She has joined forces with the Acting Minister of Police to ensure a safe and uninterrupted learning environment.
The Gauteng Education Department has reaffirmed that all children, regardless of their immigration status, are entitled to education. Human rights organizations have also spoken out against Dudula’s actions, highlighting the importance of protecting children’s access to education.
This decisive action sends a strong message that South Africa remains committed to upholding the rights of all children to quality education.
