Self-proclaimed King Munhumutapa Jailed

Self-proclaimed King Munhumutapa, Timothy Chiminya, has been jailed for eight months for undermining President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s authority. Chiminya, who claimed his title was bestowed upon him by a spirit medium, was convicted by Harare magistrate Sharon Rakafa (not Tapiwa Kuhudzai, as initially reported) for appointing and dethroning chiefs without presidential approval .

Chiminya’s actions, including visiting Chief Seke’s homestead and declaring him dethroned, were deemed unlawful and in violation of the Traditional Leaders Act. He appointed three other chiefs in Chirumhanzu and Zaka areas, further breaching the Constitution and the Act, which grants the President sole authority to appoint chiefs.

The prosecution proved Chiminya’s actions caused unrest in some communities, and his release was deemed a security threat. Chiminya had been denied bail earlier, with Magistrate Sheunesu Matova ruling he was a security risk. However, High Court Judge Faith Mushure later granted him bail, ordering him to pay US$200 and report to police twice weekly .
