Prophet Walter Magaya Faces Legal and Financial Turmoil with Property Set for Auction

Prominent Zimbabwean clergyman Prophet Walter Magaya, leader of the Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries, is embroiled in serious financial and legal challenges that threaten his ministry’s assets, including a luxury hotel, stadium, and lodges. This latest crisis follows a High Court writ of execution, signaling imminent auction of key properties owned by PHD Ministries.

Court records under Case Number SH3294/25 reveal that Chinese national Li Xiu Yun has successfully petitioned for the sale in execution of PHD Ministries’ rights to Stand 168 of Prospect, a 3.84-hectare property located on Smuts Road, Prospect, Waterfalls in Harare. This property includes a four-star hotel facility, cluster lodges, a stadium, and related developments.

This development compounds a series of setbacks for Prophet Magaya, who just ten months ago faced public scrutiny over allegations of falsifying his O-Level examination results. Since then, the clergyman and his ministry have been battling mounting debts and legal actions.

In June 2025, GetBucks Microfinance Bank Limited filed for liquidation of Walter Magaya and his wife Tendai’s personal estates over an unpaid debt amounting to US$420,140.72. This followed a High Court judgment from October 2024 ordering the couple and their company, Planet Africa (Private) Limited, to repay the debt with 10% monthly interest from September 2024 until settlement.

Despite court efforts, attempts to recover funds have stalled. Movable assets seized from the Magaya residence were released after the Walter Magaya Family Trust filed an interpleader claim, and items taken from Planet Africa were claimed by PHD Ministries. Moreover, a 3.2323-hectare land parcel owned by Planet Africa was slated for auction in March 2025 but the sale was halted when the company voluntarily entered corporate rescue proceedings.

GetBucks asserts that all execution avenues have been frustrated, with no attachable assets found, leading to a declaration of insolvency for the Magayas. The bank has nominated Noreen Chikaka of Reign Management Consultancy as liquidator to manage the process, arguing that liquidation will serve creditors’ interests and compel disclosure of the couple’s financial affairs.

The bank also raised concerns that Walter and Tendai Magaya might attempt to evade the law by leaving the country, requesting that their passports be surrendered to prevent flight risks.

Adding to the intrigue, just weeks before these developments, Magaya and his wife received luxury vehicles and US$100,000 from Wicknell Chivayo, a controversial businessman, as a gesture of gratitude for projects credited to Magaya, including the construction of the Heart Stadium, an asset now reportedly also facing auction.

The auctioning of PHD Ministries’ properties marks a significant turning point and raises questions about the future of the ministry and the Magayas’ ability to navigate their mounting debts and legal obligations.
