Operation Harare Hygiene Blitz to Combat Bedbugs

The city of Harare is set to kick off a new public health initiative called Operation Harare Hygiene Blitz, aimed at tackling the spread of bedbugs in the high-density suburb of Mbare. The operation will focus on improving hygiene and sanitation, fumigating public places, and addressing underlying infrastructure issues.

The initiative seeks to:- Improve sanitation and hygiene in high-density suburbs
– Fumigate public places to eliminate bedbugs
– Address infrastructure issues contributing to the problem
– Raise awareness on the importance of hygiene in preventing infestations

The launch will be attended by key stakeholders, including Cabinet ministers and Harare mayor Jacob Mafume. City officials have confirmed that the operation will start in Mbare and extend to other parts of the capital in the coming weeks.

Rudo Chitambira, a senior executive at the Ministry of Health and Child Care, emphasized that the operation is not just about addressing bedbugs, but also about tackling broader sanitation issues. Urban development expert Tawanda Zhou welcomed the initiative but stressed the need for sustained investment in infrastructure and waste management to prevent similar issues in the future.

Mbare residents have expressed frustration over the recurring pest problems, which have affected schools, public transport, and markets. Many are hopeful that the operation will bring long-term solutions to the issue.
