Millionaire Hunter Meets Brutal End

A 52-year-old American millionaire, Asher Watkins, was gored to death by a massive Cape buffalo during a hunting expedition in South Africa’s Limpopo province. The incident occurred on August 3, 2025, in the 50,000-acre Bambisana concession, where Watkins was tracking a 1.3-ton buffalo nicknamed “Black Death” due to its notorious aggression. The buffalo charged at Watkins with ferocious speed, estimated at 35mph, leaving him no chance of escape.

Watkins, a Texas-based ranch realtor and businessman, was on a guided hunting safari organized by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris. He was accompanied by a professional hunter and a tracker when the sudden and unprovoked attack occurred. The safari company described the incident as devastating and expressed condolences to Watkins’ loved ones, including his teenage daughter Savannah and ex-wife Courtney.

Watkins was known for his fearlessness and adventurous spirit. Friends and acquaintances have paid tribute to him, describing him as a courageous person who loved his daughter dearly. A close friend, Shannon Wherry, praised Watkins’ fearlessness, saying he “met the challenge head-on, leaving this world a man of courage, faith, and adventure”.

Cape buffaloes are responsible for around 200 deaths per year and are considered one of the most dangerous animals to hunt in Africa. They are known for their aggression, unpredictability, and ability to charge without provocation. The safari company warned that buffalo hunting is thrilling but also poses significant risks, emphasizing the need for caution and expertise.
