Lightning Strikes Rural Home, Claims Young Life in Zimbabwe

A devastating incident occurred in Rushangarumwe village, Buffalo Range, when a 25-year-old woman, Chenai Mahusani, died after lightning struck her family’s thatched hut, setting it on fire. The incident happened on October 27, 2025, while Mahusani was sleeping with eight other family members.

According to eyewitnesses, the family rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped inside, managing to save eight people. However, Mahusani had already succumbed to her injuries. Her body was taken to Chiredzi General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

This tragic event has raised concerns about the vulnerability of rural homes to lightning strikes, particularly during the rainy season. Recently, a violent storm in Masvingo Province destroyed several schools, leaving learners, teachers, and villagers vulnerable. The incident highlights the need for practical measures to protect rural communities from weather related threats.
