A poignant story of love, loss, and longing has emerged from the streets of Toronto, Canada, where a Zimbabwean man, McRay “Markie” Kativhu, has found himself homeless and struggling to survive. Kativhu, 43, traveled to Canada in 2001, just before the country introduced visa restrictions for Zimbabweans, leaving him stranded in a foreign land.
Despite initially building a life in Canada, Kativhu’s fortunes took a turn for the worse, and he now finds himself living on the streets, battling mental health issues and uncertainty. His family, back in Zimbabwe, has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10,000 CAD to bring him back home.
The campaign aims to cover the cost of a one way ticket to Zimbabwe, support Kativhu’s reintegration into society, and provide access to mental health care upon his return. Kativhu’s family hopes that a return to familiar surroundings and loved ones will help him rebuild his life and find stability.
These are the challenges faced by many Zimbabweans who traveled abroad in search of better opportunities, only to find themselves struggling to cope in foreign lands. As Kativhu’s family appeals for help, his story serves as a reminder of the importance of community, support, and the comfort of home.
