Extradition Case of Zimbabwean Activist Wellington Masiwa (Nyokayemabhunu) Continues in South Africa

The extradition case of Zimbabwean activist Wellington Masiwa, also known as Nyokayemabhunu, is ongoing at the Randburg Magistrates Court in South Africa. Masiwa has been in custody since his arrest on April 13, 2025. He faces charges for breaking South African immigration laws.

Zimbabwe wants Masiwa to be sent back to Zimbabwe to serve an 18-month prison sentence. The Zimbabwean authorities say he committed fraud by cheating someone out of US$3,660 in a property deal in Harare. However, Masiwa denies these claims and says he was in South Africa when the fraud supposedly happened.

Masiwa’s lawyers have questioned the extradition request. They believe the charges may be politically motivated because Masiwa is a well-known activist. They say the case is unfair and may be used to punish him for his political views.

The court hearings have been delayed several times, and the next hearing is now scheduled for October 28, 2025.

Supporters of Masiwa say this case shows the political problems activists face in the region. They are watching closely to see how South Africa handles the case. Many believe the decision will show if South Africa respects human rights and treats political cases fairly.
