The driver involved in a fatal road accident in Harare’s central business district has met the family of the man who lost his life in the tragedy, expressing remorse over the incident that occurred earlier this week.
The accident happened on Wednesday when an unregistered taxi driver, commonly known as a mushikashika operator, struck and killed motorist Blessing Mangezi while attempting to flee from municipal traffic officers. Mangezi had reportedly been searching for City of Harare parking officials to resolve a vehicle clamping issue at the time.
On Thursday, the driver, Thompson Zuze (32), visited the bereaved family at Parirenyatwa Hospital as they processed burial arrangements. Accompanied by his father and younger brother, Zuze apologised for his actions, admitting that his reckless driving caused the fatal accident.
Zuze said he panicked after being chased away from his usual pick-up point along Robert Mugabe Road, explaining that he was aware he was operating in a restricted area. He told the family that he did not see Mangezi until it was too late and insisted that he never intended to harm anyone.
He also revealed personal struggles, saying he was under immense emotional and financial pressure following the breakdown of his marriage and his responsibility to support two young children. He said these stresses had affected him even while driving.
A family representative, Bothwell Nedawa, acknowledged Zuze’s apology, saying the visit showed remorse and respect for human life. While the loss remains deeply painful, the family said the gesture was a step towards healing.
Nedawa described Mangezi as a devoted family man and the main provider for his household. He said the deceased had recently spent time with relatives during the festive season and was preparing to return to South Africa. Mangezi, a father of three and one of 23 siblings, will be laid to rest at his rural home in Chimanimani.
The family also raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the clamping of Mangezi’s vehicle, saying he had already paid a fine and was still familiarising himself with Harare’s roads.
In a separate statement, Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba conveyed condolences to the family. National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi dismissed claims that police were directly involved in the accident, stating that the incident resulted from a private vehicle and that no police operation was underway at the time.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and for the public to avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.
