Donkey Thief Caught, Gets a Hee-Haw of a Sentence

In a shocking turn of events, Hardlife Nyathi, a 25-year-old resident of Beitbridge, has been sentenced to 24 months in the slammer for stealing not one, but two donkeys. Because, you know, that’s exactly what you want to do with your life – steal donkeys.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Nyathi was caught red-handed (or should we say, red-hoofed?) with the stolen donkeys, and was subsequently convicted by the Beitbridge Magistrates Court.

The drama unfolded when Reason Moyo, a 50-year-old villager, left his donkeys unattended in the grazing lands. Nyathi, being the master thief that he is, swooped in and snatched the donkeys without anyone noticing. That is, until Moyo realized his beloved donkeys were MIA and alerted the anti-stock theft committee.

The committee tracked down Nyathi and found him with the stolen goods (or should we say, stolen donkeys?). Nyathi’s defense team must have been on point, because the court decided to suspend 8 months of his sentence for 5 years. And, get this, an additional 6 months was suspended on condition that he gives the donkeys back. Talk about a second chance!

In the end, Nyathi will serve 10 months in prison, where he’ll have plenty of time to reflect on his life choices. Maybe he’ll even learn to appreciate donkeys from afar. Who knows? Stranger things have happened.
