Couple Accused of Beating 6-Year-Old to Death for Failing to Say Mother’s Surname

Couple Accused of Beating 6-Year-Old to Death for Failing to Say Mother’s Surname

A tragic case has unfolded in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, where a couple, Clifford Ncube and Bridget Ncube, are accused of brutally assaulting their 6-year-old son, Mpumelelo Ncube, for failing to say his mother’s surname. The child tragically lost his life on January 13, 2024, after being rushed to Gwanda Provincial Hospital.

According to eyewitness testimony, the couple allegedly assaulted the child inside a makeshift tent at Mazepa Mine in Esigodini, where they worked. The child was repeatedly beaten after failing to pronounce his mother’s surname, with the father, Clifford Nsingo, reportedly saying, “Khuluma isibongo sika mama” (“say your mother’s surname”).

A witness testified that they heard the sounds of beatings and Nsingo’s voice, followed by the child being left unattended. Another witness, Esline Ncube, a shopkeeper at Mazepa Mine, stated that Nsingo came to her asking for R100 to take the child to the hospital, claiming the child was ill. When Virginia Moyo saw the child, she observed severe injuries, including scars, fresh wounds, and saliva coming from his mouth.

The couple was arrested and charged with the child’s murder. Police recovered exhibits, including switches and a shoe, allegedly used in the assault. The post-mortem results confirmed that the child died from injuries consistent with assault. The trial is ongoing, but proceedings have been delayed due to the father, Clifford Nsingo, defaulting on his bail and currently being on the run.

The court will continue to hear evidence and testimony in this case. The prosecution will work to prove the couple’s guilt, while the defense will argue their innocence. The outcome of this trial will determine the fate of Clifford Ncube and Bridget Ncube.
