Penhalonga Mine Collapse, Death Toll Rises to Eight as Rescue Efforts Continue

A devastating mine shaft collapse in Penhalonga, Manicaland, has claimed the lives of eight people, with rescue teams working tirelessly to recover remaining bodies. The incident occurred at an illegal mine, and authorities are assessing the site to determine the full extent of the tragedy.

Some victims have been retrieved and taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare. Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, confirmed the updated death toll and warned that ongoing rescue operations remain high-risk.

The collapse has sparked concerns about the safety of artisanal mining in the area, with many calling for increased regulation and enforcement to prevent such tragedies. Redwing Mine, located in Penhalonga, has a history of fatal accidents, with over 100 artisanal miners reportedly losing their lives since 2020 .

The government has pledged to support the affected families and investigate the cause of the collapse.
