As she approaches her 59th birthday, trailblazing mathematician and former University of Cape Town (UCT) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mamokgethi “Kgethi” Phakeng is challenging societal norms about aging, femininity, and self-expression. In a bold Instagram post, the academic icon declared ,  “In 10 days I turn 59. They say I should ‘act my age.’ I do!! I just do it with confidence, colour and courage. A woman’s glow at fifty is *NOT vanity, it is victory.”*

Known for her striking fashion sense, Phakeng, 59, embodies the fusion of intellect and style. “She’s unrecognizable from the shy, introverted girl from Ga-Rankuwa,” says an admirer. Her wardrobe , a vibrant ensemble of designer outfits, towering heels, and statement accessories, has made her a fashion icon in academic circles. “She commands every room, model-style,” notes _Zazim Creative_.

Phakeng, the first black female South African to earn a PhD in Mathematics Education (2002), served as UCT’s VC from 2018–2023. Her tenure saw UCT ranked Africa’s top university. Yet her defiance of ageist stereotypes steals the spotlight. “At 48, I was unrecognizable,” she shared. “Now, I wear red, I run marathons, I lead. Growing older isn’t surrender, it’s revolution.”

Her recent clash with music executive Nota Baloyi over her style (“You look like you last ate when married”) drew fire, but Phakeng fired back: “Why would I thank any farmer? Ungazifaki mntanami .” Her message, ” self-love transcends critique”.
