In a bizarre twist, Zimbabwe’s government spokespersons are at odds over a directive to ban tinted windows on vehicles. Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba has called out the order as “unauthorized” and lacking in legal foundation.
The controversy began when Provincial Affairs and Devolution Secretary Tafadzwa Muguti announced the ban, citing the need to curb drug abuse and violent crimes allegedly committed in vehicles with obscured windows. He even went as far as to say that police would impound vehicles or remove the tint themselves if owners didn’t comply.
But Charamba swiftly contradicted the move, dismissing it as “miscommunication from an unauthorised office and officer.” He attached a video clip of Muguti making the declaration, essentially saying, “Ignore this guy, folks!”
The reason behind the ban was a disturbing incident involving a Grade Seven pupil who was raped in a tinted commuter omnibus. However, it seems the government’s left hand didn’t quite know what the right hand was doing.
