Negligence and Incomplete Sewer Repair Project in Dzivarasekwa Extension, Kembo shops, Harare

Negligence and Incomplete Sewer Repair Project in Dzivarasekwa Extension, Kembo shops, Harare

I am writing to you in my capacity as the Chairman of the Dzivarasekwa Community Development Committee to bring to light an alarming situation regarding the incomplete sewer repair project in Dzivarasekwa Extension, near Kembo shops. It is crucial that this issue receives the attention it deserves, as it poses severe consequences for our community both in terms of public health and the effective use of resources generously provided by our stakeholders.

In October 2024, what began as a commendable initiative aimed at mitigating sewer system failures quickly turned sour due to negligent execution. Thanks to the generous contributions from multiple stakeholders, including a pledge of 300 litres of diesel from Rockodox Service Station and USD 550 from NBS Bank, we mobilized the necessary resources to commence the repairs. With the gracious provision of an excavator from the Harare City Council, the project initially appeared promising.

However, the critical oversight of omitting two essential manhole rings and a top cover has led to a dire situation. Water from an adjacent council valve is now flooding the area, mixing with mud and solid waste, which risks forming a blockade. Not only does this jeopardize the structural integrity of the repair work already undertaken, but it also signifies a reckless disregard for the resources and efforts invested by our partners and community stakeholders.

Despite these significant investments and efforts, the Harare City Council Department of Water has failed to act with the seriousness and due diligence this project deserved. Our prior attempts to address these issues directly with the department have yielded no results, forcing us to turn to the media to hold accountable those responsible for this incomplete, reckless, and negligent performance of duty.

We urge you to expose this situation to protect the interests of the Dzivarasekwa community and prevent such neglect in the future. Attached you will find a video documenting the current status and challenges faced due to this negligence.

Your involvement in bringing visibility to this issue is vital. By doing so, we hope to prompt immediate corrective measures and prevent further undermining of the valuable contributions made by our community and stakeholders.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. We anticipate your support in exposing this negligent act and advocating for timely interventions.
