In a shocking display of party infighting, the Manicaland women’s league of Zanu PF recently played host to a heated battle for control. The protagonists? None other than Senate President Mabel Chinomona and Zanu PF Secretary for Legal Affairs Patrick Chinamasa, who are backing rival factions for the top spot.
Mercy Sacco, allegedly Chinamasa’s ally, currently holds the acting chairperson position, but Dorothy Mabika, reportedly backed by Chinomona, is gunning for the top job. The two women even went as far as sitting at the high table during a provincial co-ordination committee meeting, each claiming to represent the women’s league.
As tensions escalated, Chinamasa stepped in to caution against public spats, assuring that the matter would be settled at the upcoming politburo meeting on July 4. “I am secretary for legal affairs, and I must ensure the law is followed,” he emphasized, arguing that Mabika’s election was unlawful.
The fate of the Manicaland women’s league now rests in the hands of the politburo. Will Sacco retain her position, or will Mabika take the reins? The outcome remains uncertain, but one thing’s for sure – Zanu PF’s internal conflicts are far from over.
Meanwhile, Zanu PF Information Director Farai Marapira attempted to downplay the factional fights, claiming they were merely a product of “vibrant engagement” misinterpreted by the opposition. However, insiders suggest that the party’s infighting runs deeper than meets the eye.
