The Unspoken Struggles of Zimbabweans Abroad

The Unspoken Struggles of Zimbabweans Abroad

The allure of a better life abroad has drawn millions of Zimbabweans to foreign lands, but beneath the surface of success and prosperity lies a complex web of struggles and sacrifices. From the grueling work hours to the crushing loneliness, many Zimbabweans in the diaspora are fighting to make ends meet and preserve their mental health.

Nokuthaba Moyo, a talented photographer, worked on international cruise ships, sacrificing her creativity and passion for the sake of a paycheck. Her days blended together in a haze of exhaustion, as she scrubbed toilets and mopped floors.

The long hours and lack of rest took a toll on her mental health, leaving her feeling drained and disconnected from the world around her. Despite her best efforts, she struggled to find meaning and purpose in her work, feeling like a cog in a machine rather than a creative being.

Johnmore Makova, a driver in Canada, spoke of the profound isolation that can come with living abroad. Despite being surrounded by people, he felt deeply alone, struggling to connect with others or find a sense of community. The loneliness was a constant companion, one that he couldn’t shake no matter how hard he tried.

For some Zimbabweans in the diaspora, the experience is marked by fear and mistreatment. Samantha Nyakudya, a nail technician in Saudi Arabia, shared her story of being mistreated and feared for her safety. Her experience highlights the need for support systems and resources to help Zimbabweans navigate the challenges of life abroad.

The Zimbabwean diaspora community is growing, with an estimated three to five million people living abroad. It’s time to break the silence and acknowledge the human cost of chasing a dream. By sharing their stories and experiences, we can work towards creating a more supportive and sustainable future for Zimbabweans at home and abroad.

Efforts are being made to support Zimbabweans in the diaspora, including initiatives to establish protective movements, promote mental health awareness, and foster community connections. These resources can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation, providing a sense of belonging and connection to others.

By acknowledging the challenges faced by Zimbabweans in the diaspora and working towards creating a more supportive and sustainable future, we can help ensure that their stories are ones of hope and resilience, rather than just struggle and sacrifice. It’s time to break the silence and build a brighter future for Zimbabweans at home and abroad.
