A growing sense of dread has settled over the high-density suburbs of Harare as a bed bug infestation spreads its dark wings, leaving a trail of discomfort, health concerns, and desperation in its wake. The scourge, first reported in Mbare flats, has now infested other areas, including Mabvuku, Kuwadzana, and Budiriro, plunging residents into a living hell.

The bed bugs, notorious for their irritating bites, have sparked fears about sanitation and hygiene, as residents struggle to comprehend the rapid spread of the infestation. One resident, who spoke to NewsDay, recounted a chilling tale of how the bugs allegedly migrated to their home via relatives from Mbare flats. “I am convinced that the bugs came from my cousins who visited us from Mbare flats. They slept over at our place and soon after, we started noticing the bugs in our home,” the resident said, shuddering at the memory. “It has been a nightmare ever since. My children are scratching themselves all night and I am at a loss as to what to do. We have tried everything from washing our bedding to using insecticides, but nothing seems to work. It’s like these bugs are everywhere.”

Harare mayor Jacob Mafume acknowledged the spread of the infestation but downplayed the severity, suggesting that the local authority had not yet received official reports from the affected suburbs. “In suburbs with detached houses, the tsikidzi do not spread. They will just affect that single house,” Mafume said, offering little comfort to the afflicted residents. “But for suburbs like Mbare, where there are flats, they spread like  wild  fire. If people iron their clothes, they will be okay.”

The city has initiated fumigation efforts in Mbare flats, but residents are questioning the effectiveness of the measures, given the ongoing spread of the infestation. Mafume attributed the spread to the second-hand clothes market, suggesting that clothing sold in such markets may have been infested prior to reaching consumers. “I know we will win the war because we have fumigated once,” he said, prompting skepticism from residents who feel that more needs to be done.

As the fumigation process unfolds, residents are urging the authorities to take more drastic measures to eliminate the bed bug problem and prevent future outbreaks. The infestation has raised concerns about the long-term health implications and the effectiveness of the city’s response to such widespread pest problems. Will the city emerge victorious from this battle against the bed bugs, or will the infestation continue to spread its darkness?
