Seasec Security Company Allegedly Fire woman for Being HIV Positive

A 40-year-old widow from Bulawayo’s Entumbane suburb has been left traumatized and jobless after Seasec Security Company allegedly demanded she prove her HIV status before firing her for attending a routine medical review. The woman had taken time off to visit a clinic in Gokwe for a scheduled HIV check-up, which she claims her employer had approved.

Upon her return to work, the woman was stunned to receive a demand for written proof of her HIV status from the company’s Bulawayo secretary, Precious Mambewu. Despite complying with the invasive request, she was still dismissed from her job, sparking widespread outrage.

The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has stepped in to investigate the matter, with Chairperson Jessie Majome strongly condemning the alleged actions of the security firm. Majome described the case as a blatant and outrageous violation of constitutional rights, including the right to dignity, equality, and protection from inhuman treatment.

The ZHRC believes that Seasec Security Company’s conduct, if confirmed, breaches several key provisions of Zimbabwe’s Constitution. Majome emphasized that such treatment of an employee on the basis of their health status is unconstitutional and intolerable.

As calls for accountability grow louder, Seasec Security Company has yet to respond to the allegations. Their continued silence is fueling public anger, with many demanding disciplinary action against those responsible.

The case has reignited debates around discrimination in the workplace, particularly against individuals living with HIV. It highlights the urgent need for stronger protections for vulnerable employees in Zimbabwe and underscores the importance of promoting fair labor practices and respecting workers’ rights.

The ZHRC will investigate the matter, aiming to promote, enforce, and seek redress for human rights violations. The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining the future of labor practices in Zimbabwe and ensuring that workers’ rights are protected.
