President Emmerson Mnangagwa has arrived in Rome, Italy, ahead of a significant visit to the Vatican where he is slated to meet with Pope Leo XIV. Upon landing at Ciampino International Airport, the President was welcomed by Zimbabwe’s ambassador to the Vatican, Dr. Sekai Nzenza, alongside Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Italy, Mietani Chauke, and representatives from the Vatican.
This Saturday, President Mnangagwa is scheduled for a private meeting with the Pope. Discussions are expected to cover several important topics, including the influential role the Roman Catholic Church plays in Zimbabwe’s education and healthcare systems.
Another critical matter likely to be addressed is Zimbabwe’s recent decision to abolish the death penalty, signaling a shift in the country’s justice policies.
Following his audience with Pope Leo XIV, the President will also meet with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, to further engage on diplomatic and bilateral issues.
