“No Human is Illegal”: A Disturbing Incident of Xenophobia

A viral video has exposed a shocking case of public humiliation and xenophobia at a South African hospital. A heavily pregnant Zimbabwean woman was verbally assaulted and expelled from Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria West by a group of South African women.

“You Always Come to South Africa to Make Babies, Why?”

The women accused the pregnant woman of burdening South Africa’s healthcare system, claiming that Zimbabwe’s government wasn’t paying for her treatment. “You come for blood tests for free in our country. You know we pay tax? Is Mnangagwa paying the South African government for your healthcare?”

“Go Home!”

The group ordered her to return to Zimbabwe and arrange to give birth there, saying she was no longer welcome at the hospital. “Today, when you get home, start making arrangements on where you are going to deliver that baby, because here in Pretoria West you are not coming, we do not want you anymore!”

“Compassion Knows No Borders”

This incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for urgent action to protect the rights of migrants and ensure that humanitarian principles are upheld in South Africa’s hospitals. As one advocate aptly put it, “No human is illegal. Everyone deserves dignity and respect, regardless of their nationality.”
