No Bedbug Outbreak in Bulawayo’s Nkulumane Suburb

Bulawayo Town Clerk Christopher Dube has stepped forward to clarify a pressing matter that has been causing undue concern among residents. Contrary to viral social media claims suggesting a bedbug outbreak in the city’s Nkulumane suburb, Dube asserts that these allegations are baseless and without merit. According to him, the City of Bulawayo has not received any official reports of bedbug infestations in Nkulumane or its surrounding areas, including Sokusile, Emganwini, and Nketa.

Dube’s statement aims to dispel the misinformation that has been circulating on various platforms, which he describes as “misleading and untrue.” While the city is indeed on high alert due to bedbug incidents reported in other parts of the country, there is currently no evidence to suggest that Nkulumane is affected. Dube urges residents to remain vigilant and to rely solely on official city communication channels for accurate information.

To empower residents with knowledge, Dube provided insights into how bedbugs spread and the signs of infestation. Bedbugs, he explained, are often introduced unknowingly through items such as clothing, luggage, or second-hand furniture, and they tend to hide in places where people gather or rest. Recognizing the signs of infestation is crucial, and these include itchy red or clustered bite marks, reddish-brown insects about 1/4 inch long, translucent bedbug shells, dark excrement spots on bedding or furniture, and a distinctive sweet, musty smell in affected rooms.

Prevention, Dube emphasized, is key to avoiding bedbug infestations. Residents are advised to regularly inspect their mattresses, clean frequently, reduce household clutter, seal crevices, and exercise caution when returning from travel or using shared laundry facilities.

In conclusion, Dube reiterated the importance of relying on credible sources of information to avoid unnecessary panic. Residents are encouraged to seek information from official city communication channels that carry the City of Bulawayo logo and insignia. By staying informed and taking preventive measures, residents can protect themselves and their homes from potential bedbug infestations.
