In a shocking incident, a newborn baby boy was rescued from a pit latrine in Konjana Village, Chipinge, last week. The infant, named Anashe, was born out of wedlock to Getrude Sithole, who had been searching for the father in the village.
After giving birth to the baby boy at a deserted homestead, Sithole wrapped him in a cloth and threw him into a two-meter-deep pit latrine. However, her attempt to flee was thwarted by post-birth complications, leaving her unable to walk.
A local villager, Tapera Mandipanga, discovered Sithole and followed a trail of blood to the nearby latrine, where he found the newborn baby alive. The police were promptly summoned, and a rescue operation was launched. Officers dug an underpass to access the pit latrine and successfully retrieved the infant.
Both the baby and the mother were rushed to St Peter’s Mission Hospital for emergency treatment. The baby is reportedly in stable condition. Sithole is facing charges for exposing an infant, as defined in Section 108 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
According to authorities, Sithole, a psychiatric patient, had been searching for the father of the child, but couldn’t identify him. The incident has sparked an investigation, and the police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the events.
