A police officer stationed in Mutare has been sentenced to three years behind bars after being found guilty of illegally possessing dagga.
Sergeant Maviya, who was attached to Dangamvura Police Station, appeared before Mutare magistrate Patricia Gwetsai together with a co-accused, Ngonidzashe Muzarawetu (22), of Area 7 in Dangamvura. The two were arrested on September 14, 2025, in Shurugwi.
According to court proceedings, Maviya was found in possession of 2.8 kilogrammes of dagga, while Muzarawetu had 0.04 kilogrammes. Their arrest followed intelligence received by police in Shurugwi that the pair were allegedly dealing in dagga at Nash 1 Mine.
Acting on the tip-off, officers moved in and later apprehended the suspects. A third individual, Enock Shunye, who is believed to have purchased dagga from the pair at the mine, was also arrested in connection with the case.
The court heard that Maviya and Muzarawetu initially attempted to evade arrest but were later tracked down by detectives and arrested at Batanai Shops in the Musana area as they disembarked from a vehicle.
After weighing the evidence, the court convicted the two, with Sergeant Maviya receiving an effective three-year prison sentence for his role in the offence.
