Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Marshal Munetsi has revealed that he currently has no working relationship with Warriors head coach Marian Marinica, following his controversial omission from Zimbabwe’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Munetsi, who serves as the Warriors’ vice-captain, was left out of the tournament squad in a decision that sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts. The midfielder later suggested that factors beyond injury may have influenced his exclusion, a claim that was strongly denied by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), which insisted the decision was based strictly on medical advice.
Speaking during an interview with Robert Marawa on Netflix’s AFCON Daily Show, Munetsi disclosed that his interaction with Marinica has been extremely limited since the coach’s appointment.
“Since his appointment, we haven’t really communicated,” Munetsi said. “We spoke once over the phone, but I have never met him in person. Because of that, I can’t say there is any relationship at the moment, as we haven’t worked together.”
The midfielder admitted that the lack of engagement was disappointing, particularly given his leadership role within the national team.
“As a senior player, you naturally expect more communication,” he explained. “You would want things to unfold differently, but sometimes there are situations you cannot control. Only God knows why certain things happen.”
Munetsi maintained that his injury was not severe enough to rule him out of AFCON and believes his experience could have been valuable to the squad during the tournament.
“With my experience, I believe I could have added value to the team,” he said. “In previous setups, there was usually time to discuss, plan and assess situations properly. This time, there wasn’t that opportunity. Someone in my position should at least be given the benefit of the doubt when it comes to serving the country.”
Meanwhile, Munetsi’s future at Wolves remains uncertain, with reports linking the Zimbabwe international to a potential return to France’s Ligue 1.
