Masvingo Council Official Takes His Own Life

A shocking incident has rocked the Masvingo community after Pius Nyatsanza, the Planning and Economic Affairs Executive Officer for Masvingo Rural District Council, took his own life by consuming a poisonous substance. Nyatsanza, who was based at Nemamwa Growth Point, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Morgenster Mission Hospital on June 2, 2025.

According to reports, Nyatsanza boarded a commuter omnibus in Masvingo CBD heading back to Nemamwa on the fateful day. He got off at Sani and walked into an old, empty tarred road, where he consumed the poison. Moments later, he fell to the ground, and local villagers discovered him drooling and breathing heavily. He was rushed to Morgenster Hospital, but sadly, it was too late.

Masvingo Provincial Police Assistant Spokesperson Masauso Patinyu confirmed the incident and urged members of the public to seek counseling for peers. “I urge members of the public to seek counselling from professionals or from peers rather than resorting to suicidal acts,” said Patinyu. It’s a timely reminder of the importance of mental health support and the need to prioritize our well-being.

Nyatsanza’s death is a tragic reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of seeking help when needed. His body was later transferred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital for a post-mortem examination. As the community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant, it’s clear that more needs to be done to support those struggling with mental health issues.
