A devastating tragedy has shaken the Alpha Stands community in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe, after a 42-year-old man, Marume Chinembiri, was found dead in his rented room, hanging from the roof trusses. The incident, confirmed by Chief Superintendent Ncube, occurred on October 23, 2025, and has left residents grappling with shock and unanswered questions.
Chinembiri, who had been married for nearly two decades, left behind a heartbreaking handwritten note blaming his wife, Magret Manyuchi, for his actions. “I saw messages in my wife’s phone with the man she’s cheating with, and I’m afraid of being mocked,” the note read in Shona. His niece, Catherine Chinembiri, discovered the body in the afternoon, sparking an investigation into the suspected suicide.
According to neighbors, the couple’s relationship had been troubled for years, marked by accusations of infidelity and violent disputes. “Marume confronted his wife after seeing the messages. They fought, and she moved to Mashavire Township with the children,” said an anonymous resident. In the days leading up to his death, Chinembiri appeared withdrawn, turned to heavy drinking, and was seen writing on the wall, seemingly lost and hopeless.
The police found no visible injuries aside from marks from the brown belt used in the hanging. The body was taken to Beitbridge District Hospital Mortuary, and an inquest (RRB 6495961) has been opened to determine the full circumstances. Attempts to reach Manyuchi for comment were unsuccessful.
Community reactions are mixed, with some blaming the wife and others pointing to Chinembiri’s temperament. Described by a neighbor as a former boxer with a quick temper, he struggled with alcohol addiction, which strained their marriage. “They lived like strangers under one roof,” a source said.
Chief Supt Ncube urged couples to seek help during disputes, emphasizing, “We encourage people to engage third parties like pastors, the police Victim Friendly Unit, or community leaders when facing domestic problems.” The tragedy has sparked discussions about a growing social crisis: “There are many men dying silently,” a resident lamented.
