Legal Battle Continues Over Edgar Lungu’s Final Burial Location

The dispute surrounding the burial of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu has returned to the Pretoria High Court today, following a pause in proceedings last Friday.

The Lungu family is seeking permission to appeal the full judgment, which affirmed the Zambian government’s right to repatriate the former president’s remains to Zambia for a state funeral.

Last week, both the Lungu family and government representatives informed the court they would engage in discussions aimed at resolving the conflict over President Lungu’s final resting place.

This morning, the court will be updated on whether the parties have successfully reached an agreement. Should the talks fail, the court is expected to move forward with considering the family’s application for leave to appeal to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between the former president’s family and the state, reflecting broader sensitivities about leadership legacy and national protocol in Zambia. The outcome will determine not only where Edgar Lungu will be laid to rest but may also set a precedent for how the final rites of prominent political figures are managed in the region.
