Land Grab Tensions Flare in Masvingo as Pan-Africanist Accuses ‘Political Bigwig

Masvingo, Zimbabwe – A controversy over land ownership has intensified in Masvingo after pan-Africanist Joshua Maponga alleged that 500 hectares of his ancestral land in the Lowveld were seized by a high-ranking political figure. Maponga’s accusations have sparked debate on the issues of land grabs and corruption among Zimbabwe’s political and military elite.

In a strongly worded social media post, Maponga criticized politicians, ministers, and military leaders for appropriating large areas of land at the expense of local communities. “We have lost our inheritance… This is a brewing war. You went to war to restore land, but now you’ve become kings, dining in expensive restaurants while the nation eats crumbs,” Maponga stated. His comments draw parallels to the contentious Chilonga case in Chiredzi, where plans for a lucerne project on over 12,900 hectares of communal land by Dendairy Pvt Ltd have left villagers concerned about eviction and loss of livelihood.

For local residents, land represents more than property—it embodies survival, heritage, and cultural identity. However, such disputes contribute to public distrust of government and raise questions about fairness and justice. Maponga’s remarks also reflect broader frustrations across Africa, where some leaders from liberation movements are perceived as having become oppressors of their own people.
