Zimbabwe’s Warriors have been hit by a flu outbreak ahead of their decisive Group B showdown against South Africa at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled for later on Monday.
Head coach Marian Marinica confirmed that a number of individuals within the camp have fallen ill, although he played down fears of a major disruption to preparations.
Speaking ahead of the match, Marinica revealed that the flu has affected both players and technical staff.
“There is flu in the camp, something I hadn’t mentioned earlier because it’s sensitive,” he said.
“My assistant coach, Ronald Moroka, has been affected and will not be available for the match.
I have also been hit by it, which is concerning, but we will push through.”
The Warriors are already dealing with selection challenges, having arrived at the tournament without several key players. Vice-captain Marshal Munetsi and wing-back Jordan Zemura are both unavailable due to injury, and the coaching staff is keen to prevent further setbacks caused by illness.
There are also doubts over Teenage Hadebe, who sustained an injury on Friday, while Munashe Garan’anga is still awaiting medical clearance after suffering a dead leg last week.
Zimbabwe face Bafana Bafana in their final Group B match, with kick-off set for 6pm CAT at Marrakech Stadium.
In the group’s other fixture, Egypt, who have already booked their place in the knockout stage, take on Angola. Angola and Zimbabwe both sit on one point after two matches, making Monday’s encounters decisive.
