Hopewell Chin’ono Warns On What Might Be Mnangagwa’s Newest Security Move

In a significant move to bolster the capabilities of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially handed over 102 staff vehicles at the ZNA Msasa Logistics Garrison Depot. This delivery is part of a broader plan to distribute more than 700 vehicles across the force.

Hopewell Chin’ono, a prominent investigative journalist, has raised concerns regarding the vehicles provided to ZDF personnel. According to Chin’ono, the cars may be equipped with advanced tracking and recording devices, designed to monitor movements and communications. The technology reportedly allows authorities to track who is communicating with whom, as well as detailed information on travel routes and times.

There are reports suggesting that these vehicles could potentially be immobilized remotely, adding a layer of control over their use. This level of surveillance aligns with President Mnangagwa’s ongoing efforts to maintain tight oversight over the military and security forces.

The introduction of this fleet is expected to enhance operational efficiency but also raises questions about privacy and the extent of monitoring within the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. As the vehicles are rolled out, it remains to be seen how this increased surveillance will impact day-to-day activities and internal communication among ZDF.
