President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Workers’ Day message was a masterclass in empty promises. Instead of addressing the real issues plaguing Zimbabwean workers, he opted for feel-good slogans and patriotic rhetoric.

In his statement, Mnangagwa wished workers a happy Workers’ Day and reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding their welfare, rights, and dignity. However, he failed to mention any concrete plans or policies to address the pressing issues faced by workers.

Zimbabwean workers are struggling with stagnant wages, high unemployment, and a weakened social safety net. The cost of living is soaring, and inflation is eroding their purchasing power. Yet, Mnangagwa’s message was silent on these issues.

Labour unions and civil society groups were quick to criticize the president’s message, calling it hollow and lacking substance. “No mention of salary reviews, pension reforms, or workplace protections — just empty slogans,” pension reform advocate.

As Zimbabweans look to the future, they deserve more than just empty promises. They deserve concrete action to address the challenges they face. Unfortunately, Mnangagwa’s Workers’ Day message did not deliver.
