Baltasar Engonga, the former head of the National Financial Investigation Agency (NFIA), has been sentenced to eight years in prison and fined $220,000 for embezzlement, following a scandal that has rocked the country’s political landscape.
The Bioko provincial tribunal delivered the verdict on Tuesday, August 26, finding Engonga and five other senior government officials guilty of siphoning off hundreds of thousands of dollars in public funds from the oil-rich Central African nation.
The case took a sensational turn as investigators uncovered that Engonga had secretly recorded over 400 sex tapes involving various women, including the wives of his superiors and relatives, further tarnishing his reputation and sparking widespread outrage.
